CMEA Festival, Friday 3/19/10

Warrior Band ONLY

CMEA stands for California Music Educators Association.  CMEA sponsors music festivals all over California.  In fact, until recently and for 16 years in a row, STANDARD hosted and ran the CMEA music festival for Kern County JH/MS bands and orchestras.  The festival location this year is Independence HS, 8001 Old River Rd. DRIVING DIRECTIONS: 99 south to Panama Lane, West on Panama Ln. South on Old River Rd. School is on right just before McCutcheon Rd.

The CMEA festival is free and open to the public.  The Warrior Band will be the last band before the lunch break on Friday 3/19.  Our performance time is 11:20am.  Be sure to allow plenty of time to arrive, park, and find the auditorium.  Audience members are not admitted once we have begun our performance.

WB will be wearing their uniforms.  Please make sure the uniforms are clean and ready to go. If uniform was not taken to cleaners during marching season, please take it now!!!  Students will need to wear band shirts under the uniform.  Student transportation to and from event will be via school bus.  We will probably be stopping somewhere for lunch on the way home.  Parents and family are welcome to stop by as well.

What is CMEA Festival???

A CMEA Festival could be considered in some ways to be an indoor competition.  There are 3 judges and each judge scores the band in Quality of Sound (30 points), Technique (30 points), Musicality (30 points), and Other Factors, including appearance, attenttiveness, choice of music, etc (10 points) for a total of 100 points possible.  Unlike a marching competition, bands are not being compared to each other, but only to the "judging standards". There are no 1st-2nd-3rd place awards.  Ratings of I, II, III, IV, V are given instead.  Directors may also choose to have their groups perform for comments only without receiving a rating.

RATINGS

90-100 = I (Superior)

80-89 = II (Excellent)

70-79 = III (Good)

60-69 = IV (Fair)

59-Below = V (Needs Improvement)

Overall ratings are awarded based on averaging the ratings (not the scores) of the 3 judges.  If at least 2 of the 3 judges scores the group as SUPERIOR, then that group is awarded a SUPERIOR rating and that group is entitled to purchase a SUPERIOR PLAQUE.  There are no limits on the number of Superiors that can be awarded.

Currently, there are 14 Superior Awards on the wall of the SMS bandroom, 12 of which have been earned since Mr W has been here.  Strangely enough, the awards were all earned in streaks of 4 years in a row, with breaks of a year or two(or 3) in between.  Guess what??!!  2009 was the 4th year of our current streak.  We are hoping to break the "5th year jinx" in 2010!!!!!!!!!
