COMPETITION NEWS

Our first competition is coming up on Saturday October 25 at Garces. Exact times and schedules for each competition will be published approx. one week before each event. I have to wait until I receive the information from the competition before I can release exact details.

Here is some general information that I hope will answer some of the questions newcomers and 7th graders (and their parents) might have. This information applies to all of our Fall competitions and parades.
For each event, all students meet at SMS, wearing the uniform.

CG meets at least one hour earlier (in the room next door to the band room) to do hair. HAIR HELP volunteers are urgently needed to braid the hair on 29 heads!

Transportation via school bus is provided for all events. All students are required to ride the bus to the event, but may be signed out at the event to ride home with parents. Students wishing to ride home with someone other than their parent/guardian must bring a note signed by parent/guardian stating to whom the child may be released.

We never stay and watch the whole event. It would take too long to stay and watch the HS competitions that occur after the JH/MS competition. HOWEVER, we do try to stay and watch NHS at one event per year if the schedule allows. In 2007, we were scheduled to stay and watch at Garces but rain forced us to leave early. The time interval between our competition and awards and the NHS performance was too great to allow us to stay at any other event.

We always stay until JH/MS Awards are over. I would really like all students to stay for the awards. It really is a special and exciting time. Award ceremonies usually start within an hour after the last JH/MS band has performed. The ceremony rarely lasts longer than 20-30 minutes.

Plan on picking students up at the gym parking lot. (This is the preferred drop off point as well.) Front gates will not be open. All students waiting for rides need to wait in the same place (THE GYM) so that we can provide supervision until rides arrive.

We try really hard to arrive back at the announced time and have a very good ontime record! Please try to have rides waiting for students at the gym at the announced "be back" time. Every year, we have students who have been told to "call us when you get back", and then are unable to reach anyone when they do try to call.

BAND BOOSTER NEWS

* The band booster club has incorporated as a non-profit/tax exempt corporation. Our new official name is Standard Music Boosters (Inc). Our officers and board members will be those selected last May. Mrs White will continue to serve as our president. Sharlene Kelley is VP, Junette McMurray is sec-treasurer.

* The Boosters Board will hold regular monthly meetings, to which all interested parents are invited. Meetings are normally the first Tuesday of every month in the band room. Next Board Meeting will be Tuesday 10/7, 7pm

* First fund raiser is now over, our decorative candle sale. Budgeted goal was $1000. Unofficial results show at least $5600 profit!!! thank you so much to all those parents and friends who supported this sale!!!!!!

UPDATE ON BAND BUDGET CUTS

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to all who made their voices heard over the last several months! It looks like someone was listening. As you may recall, there were two budget cut proposals that would have had a negative impact on band. One was to "suspend band trips". The latest word is that we WILL receive funding for transportation in the same amount as last year. However, keep in mind that costs have sky-rocketed so we may have to supplement our budget with band fund-raiser money. This is something we have always been willing and able to do.

The 2nd proposal was to eliminate zero-period PE. Our principal Mr Gisbertz recognized what a blow this would be to the Warrior Band and came up with a plan to reduce the cost to the district while still preserving Zero PE for those band students who want and/or need it. We have some students who could not even have been in band at all this coming year without zero period PE, so this is extra good news for them!
