All band members are expected to work together, with positive conduct, attitude and 100% effort, to accomplish the Warrior Band Goals 2009-2010. In order to meet these goals, all band members must make a commitment to stay in band for the entire year. If each band member is working to meet the goals, then the band as a whole will be successful. And of course, a student's conduct, attitude, effort and willingness to work towards the goals will also factor into his/her grade in band.
Specific requirements include:
1) Come to class on time and prepared. This means having music, instrument, and all needed accessories, and taking care of any problems before class starts.
2) Be musically prepared for class by practicing outside of class, attending sectionals (before school, break, or lunch). and passing all required playing tests. Band members must take instruments AND music home on Fridays unless otherwise directed.
3) In the fall, memorize the competition march and Hail Standard. In the spring, memorize all Knotts music.
4) WB members must attend all morning marching practices. Be prepared and on time, just like for class. Practices start at 7:25am so arrive by 7:20am please. CB members wishing to be part of the Warrior Marching Band (and go on the Knotts trip in the spring) must also attend the morning practices. If a student has an excused absence from school, then absence from practice is automatically excused. If a student is at school but is not at practice, then absence must be cleared with the band director. (see below for contact info)
5) Band members MUST attend ALL performances as listed on Advance Planner. An unexcused absence from a performance is a very serious offense. Even one person missing from an event can have a negative impact on the entire group, so it is very important that students and parents work together with the director to ensure that every student meets his/her attendance responsibilities.
- Excused Absences are granted at the discretion of the band director. Illness and emergencies are the main grounds for granting Excused Absences. In order to be excused, absences must be cleared by parent email, phone calls or written note. Emails and calls on the same day of the event are appreciated. - Unexcused Absences. Depending on circumstances, consequences may include one or more of the following: lowering band grade for the quarter one full grade.(if there is a 2nd Unexcused absence in same quarter, grade goes to an "F"), loss of Knotts trip participation, placing student in a different band level, or totally removing student from the band program. Examples of unexcused absences include, but are not limited to: "going out of town", "attending athletic event", "I did not have a ride", "I am grounded", " birthday parties", etc.
- Any special circumstances, problems, concerns, or exceptions must be discussed with director well in advance, preferably at the beginning of the year. (see first bullet point above)
Warrior Band (WB) is our main and advanced band for 7-8th graders. All members of the WB are automatically members of the Warrior Marching Band(WMB).and must attend morning practices and all events listed on Advance Planner. Concert Band (CB) is an intermediate group for 7-8th graders. It is mainly for those who need a little more instruction in order to be ready for WB. CB members can participate in the WMB. Those not quite ready to perform in competitions will be allowed to participate in the parades. Anyone wishing to go on the KNOTTS trip must participate in the WMB morning practices and events.
SPECIAL NOTES ON KNOTTS TRIP:
1) This trip is paid for by the Standard Music Boosters. The money comes from the fund raisers listed in Advance Planner. It is important that everyone helps in these efforts or we will not be able to go!
2) This trip is a REWARD for all those who have met all the requirements above. That includes perfect attendance (with only EXCUSED ABSENCES) at all events.....This also includes attendance at morning practices of at least 80%. Students with less than 80% practice attendance will be considered on a case-by-case basis( for example, percentage of excused vs unexcused absences) .... Since band grades reflect conduct, effort(100% needed), and attitude, students must receive at least a "B" in band in all 3 quarter in order to go to KNOTTS.
